Static in the Chest: Mara Van Dyck’s Honest Path to “Not Alone”
Some types of silence can feel both crowded and empty. The sound of static filling the chest, concrete filling the throat, an almost-humming kind of quiet exists when Mara Van Dyck begins telling her story.
It begins with a girl, who at age 11 found herself sitting alone at a piano feeling something unnamable to her. Not with any set plan or idea — only by instinct. When you look back it is easy to see the beginnings of what would later be referred to as Hero’s Journey, where there is no desire for recognition but only the desire to understand through music.
Her new single “Not Alone” embodies this exact point where scale meets vulnerability. It does not rush in but rather allows for its performance to take a breath. Much like a beer that has been sitting on the windowsill collecting dust; The initial sound is flat, raw, human. Slowly but surely it completely takes form. The chorus hits at a volume well beyond its initial levels. The sound is bright and strong similar to how daylight creates smoke trails from the ash skyline. Incredibly cinematic and yet still not overproduced; delivers an emotional experience without slipping over the edge into dramatics.
Underneath the gentleness exists a purposeful cerebral quality. Mara understands what many new pop artists do not: connectivity supersedes accuracy. Additionally, while Mara has been influenced by vocalists of extraordinary ability (e.g., Demi Lovato and Tori Kelly), she does not follow them; rather she interprets their artistry. Her singing contains power, but it is held back in such a way as to enhance the reality of emotion. For example, she knows when to use small amounts of vocal aggression, and when to sing with an emotional inflection while using an alternative style of her vocal development.
Concurrently, her sound and image create an environment that embodies a soft, passionate defiant quality of dreams through dream pop, with ambient shades, producing an emotional chiaroscuro effect. Luxembourg may not be considered a primary universe of pop music, nor does it define Mara's artistry; however, she assures her work reaches across all global boundaries. Her creation employs limitless means of telling stories.
"Not Alone" is more than just a song; it offers a solution to an existing problem — a new way to understand how the mind formulates stories for itself, allowing the mind's true nature to come to the surface. Although this is incredibly challenging in today's world with so many people being overwhelmed by the noise of life, Mara Van Dyck enables her audience to feel visible.
