DOLOURS ARRIVE WITH A BLADE, NOT AN APOLOGY
Certain bands will knock on a door, however, Dolours will kick yours in!
"Blunt" does not introduce itself gently, it explodes into the world. The four piece from the Midlands have spent months in a rehearsal room with no audience developing something abrasive enough to leave an impression on a person. And now...it's here; and the silence around it has ended.
There is a category of UK based post punk music that has a quality about it of being locked in a cold apartment for too long, full of nerve and absolutely no comfort. Dolours make music in this style, however they incorporate synthesizers around the edges, spiraling beneath the bass like static that you can't get tuned out. The mechanical discipline of early Joy Division's music combined with the immediate "nothing to lose" energy of Fontaines D.C. gives this track the essence and guitar of both of these great bands. The drumming is already under full pressure when the drums finally arrive.
Lyrically speaking, "Blunt" deals with the themes of severing connections, leaving behind a person whose identity no longer fits them. It is not delicate in addressing this theme, nor does it need to be. The catchy chorus of this song will have you singing along without realising it is about leaving everything behind.
It is not polish that defines the land on this track but rather, all of its imperfections. Dolours has recorded every aspect of the production on their own and you can feel the authenticity of the music through the imprints left by four individuals who fought to create each piece. The dynamic between melody and darkness, the desire to sing along with the music and the desire to create uneasiness, is what this music is about.
This is a band working together to create songs that provide no easy catharsis; instead their goal is to create a strong emotional experience. "Blunt" does not want to be liked; it wants to be experienced and not forgotten.
